Siena, a city of the Tuscany region in Italy
Siena is a capital city of the Siena province of the Tuscany region in Italy. With the population of about 54,000 people, which rises greatly thanks to the tourists, Siena is one of the most visited places in Italy. The historic center of the city was added to the UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Apart from numerous architectural monuments, museums and medieval castles, Siena can boast of its fine cuisine.
The history of Siena began around 900 B.C., when this site was settled by the Etruscans. It also belonged to the Gauls and the Roman Empire, but during the rule of the latter it wasn’t a prosperous city. Siena was situated far from major trade routes and didn’t receive much attention. After the fall of the Roman Empire the city passed to the Lombards and in 774 it was captured by Charlemagne. During the next centuries Siena prospered as an independent city and became a major center of money-lending. The independence lasted until 1555, when it was conquered by Spain. Then it belonged to the Duchy of Tuscany, which received it as a compensation of huge debts of the Spanish King to the Medici family. In the 19th century Siena finally became a part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Thanks to the long and reach history Siena can now boast of many architectural monuments. The most important and popular of them are Siena’s Cathedral of the 12th century; Piazza del Campo – the town’s square, where Palazzo Repubblico and Torre del Mangia are located; Piazza Salimbeni with the Palazzo Salimbeni, Academica musicale Chigiana, Villa Chigi and many others.
